HISTORY

A destination with
a story.

Zanzibar has a long history of Indian Ocean trade and cultural exchange. Stone Town developed as a Swahili trading settlement shaped by African, Arab, Indian and European influences over more than a millennium. Major historic buildings date especially from the 18th and 19th centuries, while the town also carries the difficult history of the East African slave trade. UNESCO inscribed Stone Town as a World Heritage Site in 2000 for its cultural fusion, trading history and symbolic role in the suppression of slavery.
