Ngorongoro Crater & Conservation Area
Discover what makes this destination special, when to visit and what to expect on the ground.
Know the place
before you go.
Ngorongoro Crater & Conservation Area offers a distinct combination of landscape, wildlife, culture and travel character. Ndetei Safaris can build it into a private safari, trekking journey, cultural experience or beach extension depending on your plans.
Let the season
shape the trip.
June–October is generally dry and excellent for wildlife viewing. The crater can be visited year-round, while the surrounding highlands change character with rainfall and cloud.
Seasonality affects wildlife concentration, migration position, mountain weather, road conditions and beach activities. We recommend confirming your dates and preferred experiences before finalising the route.
Come for the
landscape.
Black rhino, lion, buffalo, elephant, zebra, wildebeest, hippo, hyena, flamingos and a wide range of other wildlife in and around the crater.
A destination with
a story.
The Ngorongoro landscape is a long-established conservation area rather than a conventional national park. It protects a volcanic highland ecosystem where wildlife, pastoral communities and tourism coexist under a conservation model. The crater itself is a collapsed volcanic caldera and one of Tanzania’s most recognisable natural landmarks. Its archaeological and palaeoanthropological surroundings also connect the wider area with some of East Africa’s most important evidence for human evolution.
