HISTORY

A destination with
a story.

Serengeti National Park was established in 1951 to protect the vast ecosystem supporting the migration. The protected landscape later became part of a wider conservation story involving the Ngorongoro area and the Mara ecosystem. Serengeti was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981 and remains one of Tanzania’s defining conservation landscapes. Its name and identity are closely associated with the open plains and the annual movement of huge herds across northern Tanzania and Kenya.
