HISTORY

A destination with
a story.

Mount Kilimanjaro comprises Kibo, Mawenzi and Shira volcanic features, with Kibo rising to 5,895 metres. The protected area was gazetted as a national park in 1973, opened for tourism in 1977 and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. Kilimanjaro is also an important cultural landscape for communities living around the mountain and a major focus of conservation and mountain tourism in Tanzania.
